We are one, such is called a village in the Mfule Valley in the middle of the Zululand. Whites and Zulus built this town together at the beginning of the 20th century. From this time they have been living peacefully together without interruption. On the one side of the river lies the kraal of the Biyela tribe, whose chiefs are related to the Zulu kings and whose ancestor, Mkhosana, led a regiment in the battle of Isandlwana. On the other bank, which can be reached by a little wooden bridge, are the huts of the Whites.
Barry Leitzsch, the founder’s grandson, invited EG in March 1998 to Simunye and rendered it possible for him to realize a very intimate work about the Zulus.
Chief Ambrose Malinga, wearing a leopard skin only to be worn by chiefs, received EG at the entrance to the kraal, accompanied him to all important places within the kraal and explained their meaning. A guide following them took notes in English and Zulu for EG.
